Counting Coyotes

Inspired by coyote sightings on local walks, Counting Coyotes started as a “hermit crab” project. I learned from members of my drawing group that a hermit crab essay is one story form hidden inside another structure. There are no actual hermit crabs in this zine. Counting Coyotes is a comic about our neighborhood coyote family told as a counting book (…1-2-3-4 coyotes…). San Francisco coyotes are (in)famous and beautiful, no more so (at least in my life) than those on Bernal Hill. May this zine be a testimony to their place in our urban ecosystem. (8 pp, 4.25” x 5.5”, 2023.) I’ve made my audio version of this zine freely available here for you.
