Shades layers distorted and doubled self-portraits on translucent paper into a suspended doorway. Multiple copies of the portraits hang vertically in three layers from navigation canes, forming a large, hovering mobile that filters exterior light and moves with air currents. We’re on the threshold of going outside. Audio brings in the sonic landscape of traversing with a navigation cane in San Francisco’s Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods, and saying hello. You’ll find “City Cane Travels,” a soundscape of walking with a navigation cane (18 minutes), artwork image description (1 minute, 35 seconds), a full-length and close up photo (both with alt text), and a photo with the small haptic (touchable) models I made to show artwork materials and structure.
